Mr. J. W. Stack is at present lying seriously ill at his residence in Railway road. Hastings. A Press Association message from Sydney states that the Rev. Mr. Thatcher lias been elected chairman of the Congregational Union. Mr. T. Sabin, whose death is chronicled from Invercargill, was a resident of Hastings for a number of years during which time he practised as a veterinary surgeon.
A Sydney cablegram reports the death of Mr. Norman Selfe, engineer. He was the designer of the first ocean-going steamer built in Australia ; also of three gunboats used by’ the New Zealand Government in the Maori war. Advice has been received of the death at Wellington on Sunday last of Mrs. John Duthie, wife of the well-known merchant. Mr. Duthie, who with his third son, Edward, has been on a visit to England, was acquainted with the sad tidings bycable at Honolulu on Tuesday. Mr. T. C. Hobbs Jones, who left Napier yesterday’ morning on a holiday visit to Auckand, w-as presented by Mr. T. S. Roulston, on behalf of the Hawke’s Bay Amateur Swimming Association, with a handsome travelling trunk. The presentation was made to mark the centre’s appreciation of Mr. Jones’ services as secretary. The death is recorded at Invercargill of Mr. W. T. Sabin, at the age of 61 years. He joined the Stock Department in 1905, and for the past
ix years was Government Veterinarian and Meat Inspector for the Southland district. About three weeks ago he caught a chill, upon which pneumonia supervened. He was one of the most valued members of the veterinary profession in New Zealand, and at the time of the outbreak of black quarter among calves in the Taranaki district to him was entrusted the responsibility of inquiring into the matter.
