It is understood that the statcj merit will make pointed reference to ‘ the possibilities of utilising the water power of the Dominion for generat- ' irig electricity for commercial purI poses. Last year for this purpose a : sum of £:yx>.<M)O was voted, but the expenditure on Lake Coleridge scheme, the first on the Government programme, has not been any- < tiling like that amount, and it is anticipated that a considerable portion of the vote will have to be renewed with the idea of carrying on works at such a pace that they may become commercially useful in the next year or eighteen months. The main object of completing Lake Coleridge scheme is electrification of Lyttelton tunnel railway and it is understood that on this subject the Minister will have some valuable information to give to the country.
j’ The important feature i:i connecj tio:i with the development of hydro j electrical energy to be outlined in i the statement is in connection with Lake Waikaremoana. A sum of money is to be voted for developing this enormous possibility, one of the objects in view being electrification of the Gisborne-Mutji Railway line. , EAST COAST RAILWAY. In regard to railways, it is anticipated that particular attention will be paid to the East Coast Main Trunk line. Napier —Gisborne section. and that line particularly with the object of starting from Napier end. '
