PALMF.RSTOX ANGLERS SHOW ENTERPRISE. Pelmerston N.. Sept. ■ A largely-attended meeting of the Acclimatisation Society and anglers was held tonight. It was deetiled to establish holding ponds capable of turning out JO.fW yearlings annually in the Esplanade Reserve. The experiments conducted with the town water in the fountain basin m the Square resulted in remarkable success in turning out yearling rainbow trout during the past three years. It is now proposed to establish holding ponds 12ft by 126 ft. fed bv the water supply, and to turn out 3»).<W rainbow yearlings annually into the Manawatu. Mangatainoka. Makuri, Akatarewa, and other streams in this district which have now brown trout, and would, if fully stocked with rainbow, form the finest Hy fishing streams in the world for three to four-pound fish, expert enced anglers holding that nowhere else even in New Zealand are there so many and such suitable streams as from this watershed. So far the fry turned out is eaten bv the Rig trout and eels, teat where the fry was held to the veariiim stage the turning out has been a great success. It is proposed to get the trv from the Wellington Societv ami rear it here. The cost of the hold ing ponds is estimated at t‘ls*>. ot •which the Wellington which received I’l-ioo f too annual ly in license fees. etc., from the district is to be asked for L'.s*>. the rest being subscribed a*. - .. Tlie Borough Council is being asked for a site and fur water. This would then be an ideal fishing ground for Wellington anglers, a. well a- the rest of the world. Brown trout were first liberated here about 16 .w iirago. and ate in all the streams, but it is thought rainbow would ii-in .d. more preferable.
