LOAN £27stt. £ Wellesley road widening, r.pent 330 Hastings street South widening s) >ent 160 495 On pcrstial <-f the proceeding amounts it will be seen that alteration in the apportionments <>i the loan moneys have been made during the last, three year:;, with the result that some of the moneys apportioned may require eventually to be withdrawn if the sum voted, £15,000. is to be adhered to. «
The item of £5500 apportioned for wood blocking or asphalting Emerson street with real asphalt, not tar macadam, could, in my opinion,, be quite well omitted as hieing a refine meat, which, however desirable, should be postponed until the real necessities, so apparent in etho) streets, have received attention. It will be noticed that the foregoing sums are approximate only, but they are believed to be closely so in most cases and in the otheis are believed to be accurate, the latter being those which have been taken since I took up duty hete. A system has been arranged tn this office, and is now in use, whereby | the allocations are duly recorded ] every fortnight. | In valuing, as was necessary in ] some cases, the cost of the work done in the past 1 made several visits to the various streets and eventually found that these valuations, together with the total expen- | diture on other streets agreed well I with the actual sums expended, with i the exception of tlie items against I Wellesley road and Hastings street | south, in which the sums expended | are much less than my approximate i valuations of tlie work done. As [ this work was done before my time | I am unable to account for this, uni less it be that some of the work i was inadvertently charged to tnainI ter.tince instead of to loan in the [ past. I Mr Sturrock’s report also contains I his remarks upon street and other I works recently constructed. ! Mio McGrath moved that tlie engineer be congratulated on his report ami satisfactory progress that had been made with the works. i The motion was seconded by the Deputy-Mayor and carried unanimously. it being also agreed to retei j the whole <>l the report to the Roads [Committee.
