A PROFITABLE YEAR

A SURPLUS WITHOUT A DEBT.

Melbourne, Sept. 14. In the Assembly the State Treasurer delivered his Budget. The revenue is £9,142,534, which is £177,869 in excess of the estimate. The expenditure was £9,117,212 or £176,635 in excess of the estimate.

The railways surplus was £262,210 and the State coal mine surplus £15,578. The interest received on advances to land purchase, water trusts, etc., exceeded the interest payable by £47,822. The Treasurer claimed that these figures showed that there was no Victorian public debt.

The overseas trade amounted to £38,190,842, an increase of 20 per centum, in three years.

The State’s production amounted to £43,181,777, an increase of 20 per centum.

The bank deposits were £17,272,000 and increase of £2/10 '- per head in three years. The credit foncier system proved highly successful. The estimated revenue for the current year is £9,686,000 and the expenditure £9,656,424.
