In reply to a copy of a resolution forwarded by the secretary of the Hastings Chamber of Com merer drawing attention to the insufficient number of policemen doing duty in Hastings and district, the Commissioner of Police (Mr. F. Waldegrave) has written stating that the question of making provision for further police protection at Hastings has been noted for early attention. “AN ECONOMIC ABSURDITY.” Mr. Eustace Lane has given notice to move at the next meeting of the Hastings ( handier of Commerce. “That the attention of the Government be drawn to the economic absurdity of dragging trade (that of Taharua and surrounding areas) 270 miles to Auckland which should come to port in about 70 miles and that the Gov ernment be urged to lay off the route of the East Coast Railway m sucl. a direction as will, consistent with its ultimate destination, serve as extensive an area of undeveloped countrv a s possible.
