CHARACTER

AUCKLAND SAVINGS BANK

EULOGISED. ■ 1 [per pp.ess association.] Auckland, July 22. The Governor, speaking at the ceremony of the re-opening of Auckland Savings Bank, which has; been remodelled at a cost of £6OOO, referred to and paid high ■ tribute to the public-spirited men; who had nurtured the institution; through a period of adversity to the present proud position of prosperity with 45.776 depositors, with deposits amounting to £1,292.191. ; Of all the enactments of the last| century, of all the beneficent insti-; tutions, none contributed a morej potent influence on the national' character and personal and contentment than the Savings; Bank. He spoke of the importance' of the institution in encouraging: thrift, especially amongst the indus-j trial classes. The economic conditions of New Zealand and the rate; of wages were higher than those of f older countries, but the cost of; living was unalterably and remorse-1 lessly higher, therefore it was ini J portant for workers to be encourag-! ed to provide for the time when it j would no longer be in their power; to earn money, and they yet had! time to provide for old age.
