Lord Kitchener sails for Egypt in September.
The Hon. W. Pitt, architect for the Napier Municipal Theatre, will return to Napier on Monday.
Mr. W. Dean Lysnar. father of the Mayor of Gisborne, died at Auckland on Wednesday. The Hon. J. A. Millar. Minister of Railways .left Wellington last night for Dunedin. He will return to Wellington early next week.
Mr. T. Brooke. District Surveyor, leaves Napier on Monday to carry out the survey of the AVaipuka block. Waimarama. in connection with the road deviation. His Excellency the Governor left Wellington yesterday for Auckland. Lord Islington is to open the new Savings Bank building there to-day. and will return to Wellington on Monday evening. The Rev. R. McNaughton. who has been conducting a week's mission in Masterton .will return by the express train to-night and preach at Napier as usual at tomorrow morning’s services.
Mr. R. Douglas Fry. the wellknown animal painter .died at Neutral Bay. Sydney, last week, after a brief illness, at the age of 39 years. Mr. Fry arrived in Australia from England a few years ago. The “Dannevirke Evening News” publishes a statement that Sir Joseph Ward has purchased an estate in Essex, England. The report is said to have reached the Dominion by a small country {taper posted out. Mr. Walter Wright, at present dairy produce grader ir. charge at Patea ,has been appointed inspector of New Zealand dairy produce in London. He will take up his new duty before the coining season commences. '* Private advice has been received by Mr. 11. Twiss, of Stratford, to the effect that his brother-in-law. Major Lescelles. who recently proceeded to England, has been appointed aide-tie-camp to Lord Kitchener. As the Irish envoy’s departure from New Zealand has been postponed until the 28th in.st., the banquet to them at Wellington lias been altered to take place on Thursday evening next in the concert chamber of the Town Hall. Sir James Carroll. Acting-Pre-mier, accompanied by Mr. Fisher, Secretary for Native Affairs, and Dr. Pomare. Native Health Officer, left Wellington by to-day’s express for Huntlv to attend the Native Conference at Waihi. They will return to Wellington on Monday
evening. Mr. W. H. Cook, who has resigned the position of Pet one Borough Engineer in order to take up a similar position at Hastings, was entertained at the Petone Commercial Club <m Thursday evening by a number of friends, who seized the occasion to make Mr. Cook a presentat ion.
Mr. G. Jones, at the meeting of the Kai Ora Swimming Club last evening was the recipient of a handsome silver tobacco box, suitably inscribed, as a slight token of the esteem in which he is held by the members of the club. Mr. Harrop, who made the presentation, referred in eulogistic terms to the many good qualities of the secretary, and hoped he would accept the small gift as a token of regard from the club. Mr. A. Robertson also spoke, endorsing the remarks made by the previous speaker. Air. Jones made a suitable response.
