A sitting of the Native Land Court opened at- Hastings this morning, Judge Gilfedder presid-
ing. Another slight earthquake shock was noticed at Hastings shortly after 11.30 o’clock last night. The shock was also felt in Napier, and about 10 or 11 minutes after there was another slight one preceded by a rumbling noise.
At the annual meeting of the Wanganui School Committees’ Association, a resolution was carried that the Wanganui branch of the School Committees’ Association approves of a system of dental and medical inspection of school children. and that the cost be a charge on the State.
At- a sitting of the Conciliation Council in Napier yesterday, it was stated that the Hawke’s Bay employers of bakers and pastrycooks were the first in the Dominion to grant their employees the 48 hours’ week. Mr. Andrew Collins one of the workmen’s assessors, congratulated the employers on having adopted the principle, and said their action in this respect was highly appreciated by the unions.
Information arrived in Wellington by the Aorangi from San Francisco .yesterday in connection with the arrest of two persons in. San Francisco charged with i bbery_at Kohn's jewellery shop, Auckland. The New Zealand constable who went over to bring the accused back is still in San Francisco, and when the mail left was likely to be compelled to go to Washington to bring back the persons for whose extradition he went to the United States.
It was stated in our columns that the amount realised by the socials held in Dalgety and Co.’s woolstore recently was £97, and that this amount would go towards the cost of erecting a Coronation Hall at Port Ahuriri. The sum of £95 was the amount realised at a previous ball, but this is to be devoted to the Port School Prize and Picnic Fund. The Coronation Hall Committee has not yet reported, but although a substantial amount is expected, it will not be anywhere near £95.
About 50 couples attended the dance, of the Napier High School Old Boys’ Football Club, held in Foresters’ Hall last evening. A most enjoyable time was spent. First-class music was supplied by Aliss Y. Benson, extras being played by Alisses Bishop and McCartney. and Messrs. W. Alitchell and J. S. Lomas. Alessrs. J. Shirley and R. Natusch fulfilled the duties of AI. The supper was all that could be desired. The honorary secretary, Mr. J. Alcßac, worked hard to ensure the success of the dance, and he was ably supported by the honorary treasurer, Mr. N. AlcCartney. and the committee, and their efforts assisted to make the evening a pleasant one to the visitors.
Air. W Plowman presided over a meeting of the executive of the Napier Competitions Society held in the Borough Council last evening. Twenty-five pounds was granted by the Borough Council towards the prize fund and the Working Men’s Club forwarded £3/3/- for a similar purpose. A vote of thanks was passed to Air. C. Smith (Wellington) for advertising the competitions. Air. Byron Brown, of Otaki, and Aliss Brown, who did so well at the Ala-sterton competitions, advised that they would probably be competitors. Air. T. St. L. Toner, in a feeling speech, tendered his resignation on account of ill-health. Alessrs. R. Bishop. H. L. Harston and W, Plowman spoke regretting (Mr. Toner’s decision, and expressed a hope that he would reconsider it next year. Mr. M. Treston was unanimously elected a member of the executive, vice Air. Toner, resigned.
