FISH INDUSTRY AT THE CHATHAMS.
THE NORA NIVEN’S ARRIVAL AT NAPIER. VALUABLE CARGO OF FISH. The “Nora Niven.” under charter ! to Messrs. McLean, arrived in port on Monday afternoon after a very j quick passage of 49 hours from i Kaiangaroa. Chatham Islands. I Capt. Goudie reports that they ex-j perienccd a very heavy gale with I very high confused sea on the voyage to the Chathams, but the little I vessel behaved most splendidly, receiving no damage from the heavy I seas. I The fishing at Cnat i.ams is very j
good, although the weather has of late not been very favourable. The “Nora Niven” brought a full cargo of blue cod, consisting of 980 cases of probably the best sample of cod yet delivered in New Zealand, and also 4.1 tons of hapuka. The whole of the cargo was received at Kaingaroa from the works of Messrs. McLean, and is valued at about £'l2ot‘. This should be considered satisfactory, and there can be no doubt that the Chatham Islands fishing industry is now firmly established. A considerable portion of this eartro has been purchased by the N.Z. Trawling Cornany, and the remainder is to be shipped to New South Wales, where, we are informed. much better prices can be obtained.
