In the Hospital Board report yesterday one sentence occurred the uncomplcteness of which is likely i’. create a wrong impression. Clause 2 of the Finance Committee’s report read: “That the fees charged for the treatment of the late Mr. J. G. Irwin, viz., £ll/19/-, te written off.” It must be understood that the writing off was ordered for no other reason than that the amount was wrongfully charged by the board .and that the amount was not owing by the friends of the deceased.

Butter is steadily rising. It now stands at 1/5 per pound retail, with a possibility of I >6 being reached before the end of the week. A Wellington merchant, discussing the matter with a “Times” reporter yesterday, emphasised the point that the traders were not responsible for the high price ruling. He read two telegrams sent to dairy factory managers in response to inquiries for quotations. One was from Kaupokonui offering the output of July and August, estimated at 316 boxes respectively, at 13 per pound wholesale. The other was from the Mangorei factory quoting 1/3.L “This shows,” observed the merchant, “that the traders in town are not taking any undue advantage of the public.” Of course, this state of affairs cannot last very long. In a fortnight or three weeks, with decent weather, prices should show a change.”
