PROTECTION OF SPORT.

! FORTHCOMING CONFERENCE • AT WELLINGTON.

i On tin- 181 L instant a Conference i is to be held in Wellington for the I purpose of considering what steps I should be taken to safeguard the

‘ interests of sport in its various I branches throughout the Dominion. The Auckland Mutual Sports ProItection Association has appointed | Mr. R. A. Armstrong as its deleigaie to represent .the Association I at the Conference, and this morn- ! ing a pressman looked him up for a talk on the matter.

"I understand that the object of the coming Conference is to establish throughout New Zealand similar institutions to that already started in Auckland, the constitution of which has been drafted in such manner as to embrace every branch of sport,” remarked Mr. Armstrong to an ' Auckland Star” reporter. "It is very necessary,” he continued, '“that sportsmen should awake to the seriousness of the position. Grievous inroads have already been made in the sport of racing, the country districts especially having suffered severely. That the ultra puritanical party are not confining their attentions to racing is evidenced by their attacks on the people’s Sunday recreations —yachting, golfing, fishing, etc., having already been subjected to much hostile criticism from them. It should be the aim of all good sportsmen to assist one another, and no effort should be spared to check this growing tendency of interference on the part of those who do not understand or support any branch of sport.

“We have a number of country clubs in our Association, and 1 have notified them of the Association's intention to be represented, and have invited them to forward to me any remarks or suggestions which they may wish to be brought up at the Conference,” said Mr. Armstrong.
