In connection with the Te Mata : drainage scheme, it was stated that the council had no power to . strike a maintenance rate. As this was not a very important matter, the chairman stated that he would go into it thoroughly. The Southland drain was in good < order, and the matter of doing any work on it was held over for next: ' meeting. ; Extra clerical help was authorised , for the collection of rates. i It was decided that some remun- ( eration should be given to a sur- ■ ) faceman at Kuripaponga, who when i repairing a culvert became lost and I i spent a miserable night out on the I hills. ! Chambers stated that to main ain the bridges out of the general account was illegal. If the motion were passed, the deliberations of the’ council would be in a state of chaos. In the present state of the maintenance of the [bridges everything was running smoothly. For these reasons he would vote against the motion. Mr. Donnelly agreed with Air. (,'rosse. He would also vote against the* motion as the Petane member was no» present. Mr. Rathie was in favour of the motion. !

Air. Shrimpton would not support, the motion, as the list of bridges would always be increasing. : Air. Simson said that he included in Lis list of bridges all those over 170 feet. Air.
