BIG FIRE AT SYDNEY.
£50,000 DAMAGE. [press association.—copyright] I Sydney, June 26. A fire has just started at Fuerth, ■ Nails and Co., printers and paper- j box manufacturers, in the centre f of a large block in Pitt street. ! (Received 27, 9.10 a.m. Sydney, June 27. After the first check the fire gained rapidly until 12.30, when the roof fell in and helped to crush the flames. Feurth, Nalls and Co.’s buildingj with contents were utterly burnt out. Only three feet of brick wall saved the adjoining premises of' Messrs. William Brooks Company, ! a large stationery warehouse and’ printing establishment. . ' The origin of the fire is unknown. S It was first noticed at 10.30. s Being in the centre of the city,! the whole brigade turned out anti! attacked on all sides, but were; greatly hampered by the fact thatj the building, which was five storeys high, was situated off the main' street, and surrounded by extreme-' ly narrow lanes. I Lines of hose were carried i through and over other tall build- • ings near by, blit by the time that; was done the building was well alight, and the firemen were able to do but little. Huge quantities of burning paper were carried half a mile away, j which caused considerable anxiety j until rain began to fall. j Myriads of sparks made a mag-1 nificent sight, which crowds watched throughout the night. | The stock and machinery were! insured in various offices for £35,000. The damage is estimated I to be«£so,ooo. |
