FIRES.

WHISKY DISTILLERY BURNT. Lisbon, Jnne 12. A burning lamp near a huge vat set fire to a whisky distillery on the outskirts of Lisbon. The flames spread to other vats, and the building was soon a furnace. The employees were panicstricken. Many fled into the streets with their clothing ablaze. Some jumped from the windows in a naked condition. The firemen and soldiers are searching in the ruins for possible victims. FATAL FIRE NEAR LIVERPOOL. (Received 13, 10.0 a.m.) London, June 12. Two men and four children perished in a fire in a shop at Litherland near Liverpool. ALLEGED ARSON.

An inquiry was held to-day, before Mr. Kenrick, S.M., touching a fire on January 23rd, which resulted in the burning down of a farmhouse belonging to John Robertson, which was occupied by him and a share-milker named Nicholas' Albert Maddern. Robertson had> the house and contents'insured in j the New Zealand office for £lBo,' the claim being immediately set-! tied. Maddern also had a policy in the Guardian office for £l6O onthe furniture and effects, including' a piano belonging to Robertson, which was already insured.
