YONGALA ENQUIRY.
l : a e x p : rplexed.
Brisbane, June 13. The Yongala enquiry is being continued.
Capt. Sim, formerly master of the Yongala, described her as a very good seaboat indeed. While with her he had encountered several heavy gales. He did not believe she went on a reef. The Adelaide Company’s superintendent engineer stated the Yongala had been thoroughly tested for stability and he did not think the loss was due to a breakdown with machinery, w’hich was the strongest he had seen on the Australian coast. She was registered in the highest class at Lloyds.
Other former officers of the Yongala described her as the finest seaboat they had ever been in.
Most witnesses adduced different theories accounting for her loss, but were not even able to agree about the direction of the storm.
Many different recommendations were made for additional lighting on that part of the coast.
