ABSCONDING HUSBANDS.
STATES AGREE ON LEGISLATION. Sydney, May 25. A bill is to be introduced in Parliament to deal with delinquent husbands more effectively than is possible at present. Three States am! Ntw Zealand propose to legislate similarly, so that the way of the transgressor in this respect will be a hard one. The ActingPremier (Mr. Holman) stated yesterday that Victoria. South Australia, and the Dominion would be agreed upon it by passing bills similar to one to be introduced here. It is intended to provide that a maintenance order obtained in any State may be enforced in the others which are parties to the agreement. A delinquent husband when sent to gaol in this State for having failed to maintain his wife will be put to profitable labour, and what he earns will, after the cost of his keep is deducted. go towards the payment of the weekly amount due to the wife under the order of the Court, the balance. if any, being put to meet the arrears.
