The report was adopted. MR. Cl. I MIE’S REPORT. Consideration of the aljove report re the sewer scheme was deferred. WATER WORKS REPORT. Tenders to be called for the delivery of pipes on the ground as' required. I The Mayor. Crs. Mason and McCormick. were appointed a committee to act in conjunction with Mr. Climie in appointing a man to! inspect the testing of pipes for the water scheme. PCBI.IC WORKS COMMITTEE. Cr. Donovan moved that a Coronation memorial should take the form of a grandstand to be erected on Cornwall Park at a cost not tv exceed £.55'». , The motion lapsed for want of a seconder. The reeommcmiat ions of the above committee (already published) were adopted, the question of Coronation Day celebrations to be considered at a public meeting on Monday next. ABATTOIRS REPORT. The manager of the abattoirs. Mr. T 4 P. Short, reported as follows for the month ending May 31 : —Stock slaughtered, cattle, bullocks 101. cows 40. sheep 1041, lambs 18, pigs 33, calves 11 ; condemned. bullocks 1. cows 2, sheep 21. pigs 2.—-Adopted. RANGER’S REPORT. The Borough Ranger (Mr. J. H. H. Burns, W. F. M. Burns, and Robert Sowersby wrote calling attention to the large amount of ’storm water which flowed through the creek passing through Cornwall Park, and owing to there being no adequate outlet at present emptied itself into Pakowhai Road, and thence on to the adjoining ’and, i causing great damage to feed and fences.—The Mayor stated that the case was a similar one to Mr. Merritt’s. The creek had only recently been cleaned out. -The letter was received. F. Pagewood applied for permis- 1 i sivn to keep his rifle range open till ! 11 o’clock each evening. —To be in- • formed that the Council must enforce the by-law. viz., to close at 10 p.m. Mr. David Seannrll. solicitor,' wrote stating that Mr. J. R. Elliott would be agreeable to give up 16.' ft for the widening of Edgeley Road provided the Council would put the fences in order and paid him the sum of £22 9,9. — Referred to a sub-committee consisting of the Mayor. Crs. Donovan and Mason. G. Kemp, caretaker of the rubbish tip. drew attention to the number of rats there and the necessity of taking measures to prevent their spreading.—Poison Ito be laid. F. C. Widdop, District Engine?r of New Zealand Railways, wro’.e i asking the Council to lake over a piece of road in Station situated between the piece of r .a 1 vested in 1907 and the railway fence. —Agreed to. A. Brooke-Taylor called attention to the state of the bridge o/er the Council’s drain running through his property.—Received. C. J. Apperley drew attention to the necessity of deepening and

widening the Riverslea drain, and pointed <»ut that duriug heavy ram the present drain overflowed and flooded the adjacent properly. — -■■-Dealt with in Cr. George s notice of motion. E. J. Lol on. on behalf of the Hawke's Bay Education Board, siihinitted proposals for the earning on of plumbing classes in Hastings. Mr. Loten t<> be asked to attend next meeting <>f Council. Dr. B. S. Storey wrote explaining the nature of the accident met with l>y P. Cullinan whilst in the employ of the Council.--Cr. .Mason said the Council hail no claim on the insurance company, but as the sciatica was very probably the result of a strain, he thought something should be done to assist the man. Cr. Donovan said the case was a very dt serving one. Cr. McCormick agreed, and said the Council should consider having an insurance scheme of their own. - It was decided on the motion of Crs. Donovan and Styles to allow Mr. Cullinan the sum of £5. anil to forward a copy of Dr. Storey’s letter to the Queensland Insurance Company with a copy of the resolution. NOTICE OF MOTION.

II chains, estimated to | cost £200.)- Lapsed for want of a • seconder. •5 That steps be taken to have the Hastings Borough Council proclaimed a registering authority under the provisions of “The Motor Regulation Act, 1908.” as from July 3. Seconded by Cr. Donovan and carried. 6 That enquiries be made as to the advisability of purchasing a postage stamping machine, and that the rough average cost of postage per year be supplied bv the town clerk. -The .Town Clerk stated that the average expenditure per year on stamps was about £22. Cr. George stated that as the machine would cost £-25, he would withdraw the motion.

7 That enquiries he made as to the cause of the death of the borough horse referred to in Mr. Hallet's report; (b) what was the cost of the said horse; (c) if the horse’s death was the result of injury, and who was driving the h use at the time such injury occurred ; (d) what amount was paid f» r medical attendance, nursing f< es and burial charges on the said horse. Willoughby (£l5). GENERAL. Three applications were received for the position of clerk.—Left in the hands of the Mayor, Cr. George and the Town Clerk with power to act. In reply to a question by Cr. Donovan, the Mayor stated that the question of taking a poll of the

Styles was granted the use of half the footpath at the corner of Queen Street and Karamu road during the erection of the ‘■Tribune” buildings.
