H.B. JOCKEY CLUB

. AUTUMN MEETING. ( SECOND DAY. Fine weather again prevailed for the second and concluding day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. The attendance w’as good. The Hastings Town Band again, enlivened the proceedings with a spirited programme of choice selections. The course was in good order, haiing dried up a good deal since yesterday. All faced the starter for the opening event, a good field of 12 starting. Golden Water’s running was an improvement on yesterday, for although he ran well for a mile and a quarter on the opening day, he ran his mile and a half right out to-day. Tina Toa, who finished third, was also improved with his race on the first day, and was well up until a quarter of amile from home. A fine field of 22 faced the starter in the Okawa Hack Handicap, but unfortunately Mr. Piper let the horses off before ad vert sed’ time of starting. The result was that after the stewards met there was no option but to immediaf/ety re-run the race. Um first tim_ <«f running resulted m. Composed v.inning by a head from Mira, with Peacemaker a length and a half further off. In the second race nothing had a chance with Erin, who led from start to finish. None

of those that filled the places in the first race claimed the attention of the judge in the re-run one.

On account of the Okawa Hack Handicap being started before time, five of those engaged went out without a solitary investment on them, Raupare, who finished third, being one of them. Four of the eleven paid up for in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes, the last classic race of the season, were scratched. The local colt (Royal Scotch) carried too many guns for the southerners (Madam Madcap and Bandiera), and he was always found making the pace warm. Bandiera started a very’ strong favourite, and it was a good race all dow’n the straight betw’een him and the winner.

‘ The Burke Memorial was a splendid race to witness, and Lrdy Menschikoff, who ran a good second in yesterday’s Cup, well deserved the victory. She was kept closer to her field to-day, and was never further back than fifth. Vi and Bliss made it merry’ for nearly a mile, but when Price called on the winner for an effort she answ’ered generously. Vice-Admiral ran. much better to-day’, and his challenge w’as a solid one. Te Puia finished fourth, Vi fifth, Cheddar sixth. The following times were kindly supplied by Mr. G. L. Stead for the running of the Burke Memorial Stakes : —First furlong 13 4-ssec, second furlong 25 2-ssec, third furlong 38sec, fourth furlong 50 4-ssec, fifth furlong Imin 3 2-ssec, sixth, furlong Imin 16 4-ssec, full distance (1| miles) 2min 11 3-ssec. There were fourteen starters in the Scurry Hack Handicap, and Perceler was a good ( favourite, Amaru filling second place in the public estimation. Yesterday’s winner (Axis) w’as neglected again, and paid a very’ handy second dividend.

Following are details of the racing:— Chiti Hack Handicap Hurdle Rae* —Of 100 sovs. ; second horse to receive 15 sovs., and third horse 10 sovs. from the stake. At the railway bend Golden Water led from Appin, and still led at the last fence, Appin being right on his heels. From thence to the post the race was a great one, both horses being ridden out with the whip, the verdict ending in favour of Golden Water by less than a neck, about six lengths between second and third, Napper fourth.
