HOSPITAL AND CHARTABLE AID BOARD

ORDINARY MONTHLY MEETING.

The Hawke's Bay Hospital and Charitable Aid Board held its ordinary monthly meeting on Monday afternoon. Present : Messrs. Shrimpton. Ormond. Large. Baxter, Chambers, Crosse, Granby, Garnett, and Miller. Committees reports were dealt with as follows : — FINANCE COMMITTEE. Vouchers amounting to £753/13/10 were examined and payment is recommended. The Matron’s report was considered, and this committee recommend that the board adopt same. Maintenance fees collected during month of February : —Napier Hospital, £ll6 3/4; Wairoa Elospital ,£33/11 6; total. £149/14/10. Ordinary Account. —Cr. balance 31st March, £1414 17/9; April receipts, £l6O/18/10; total, £1575/16/7. March vouchers, £9ll/16/11 ; balance bank, £663/19 8; total; £1575 16,7. Cr. balance as above £663 19/8. Building account. — Overdraft, £3OO. —Adopted. RESIDENT MEDICAL OFFICER’S REPORT. The medical officer reported : — In Hospital on 31/3 ’ll ; Males 45, females 34 ; total 79.

Admitted during April: males 36, females 20 ; total 56.

Discharged during April: males 24, females 24 ; total 48. Died during April: males 5, females 1; total 6. In Hospital on 30/4/’ll : males 52, females 29 ; total 81. I have purused the Matron’s report and endorse her recommendations. Dr. O’Callaghan, junior medical officer, arrived at the Hospital on 28th ult. I commenced my duties on Monday evening, Ist inst. I take this opportunity of thankingthe board for the honour they have recently conferred upon me.— Adopted. MATRON’S REPORT. Enclosed is Sister Westneat’s resignation, which takes effect at the end of May, as she is taking up further training not be had here. Nurse Higginson, who was trained at Hamilton, and has been & sister at Patea for a year, has applied for the position of sister, and she seems suitable for the appointment. Sister Roy is doing duty at the Nurses’ Home. I recommend that Nurse Carruthers be given three weeks extra leave, as well as her holidays, as recommended by the Medical Superintendent.—Adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. I beg to report that the machinery and electric lighting plant are in the same order as last reported. A number of repairs have been executed during the month, including X-ray accumulators, medical coil, etc. In the lighting accumulators four old negatives were made into positives the pressure being increased thereby. GENERAL Donations were reported as follows : —Hospital Saturday £l2/8/6, Chinese residents £3B 17.'-, Union Bank £2/2, -.

The Inspector-General notified approval of the appointment of Drs Aickin and O’Callaghan. Accounts were passed as follows: —Recommended for payment by Finance Committee £753,13/10, Wairoa Hospital £37/4 2, grant to Park Island Committee £264/17/2; total £1055'15/2.

The chairman was given pow'er to deal with the question of calling tenders for clothing and funerals. Mr. Chambers moved that Mrs Golding be sent to the "Waipukurau Hospital for radium treatment.

Mr. Cranb.v suggested that some means should be provided for providing accommodation for convalescent patients to smoke or playgames in. He understood that no room was available during the wintre.

On the suggestion of the chairman tenders are to be called for the supply of 25 garden seats.

A return was presented showing the number of patients in “ Margaret Ward” for the year 1910-1911. Average number per day 21.5 ; from Park Island S : permanent chronic cases other than those from Park Island 5; other patients, in the majority of cases are aged persons mostly with chronic diseases who leave the institution after receiving l relief.
