HIGH SCHOOL GOVERNORS

MONTHLY BOARD MEETING

The usual monthly meeting of the Board of Governors was held

yesterday afternoon, in the Education Board’s offices, Napier. Piesent : Dr. T. C. Aloore (chairman), Messrs. C. H. Edwards. AV. Dinwiddie. S. McLernon, and IL D. D. McLean.

Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. G. Nelson and J. McGrath. Mi-. A. S. Polson. the headmaster

of the Napier Boys’ High School, reported that two former pupils, who left in December, had returned to school, making the roll number 147. In the individual life-sav-ing competitions for schoolboys under 15, the two candidates who entered came first and second respectively, with 66 and 60.1 marks out of 76. It was stated that next season each boy who had qualified this season in life-saving would be a leader of a team of four boys, so that this invaluable knowledge might spread through the school. Miss V. AL Gregg, the headmistress of the Girls’ High School, reported that during the last three years the attendance in the junior classes had been on the increase. For the upper forms (Standards VI and V) the numbers for 1909 were 23; for 1910. 25, and for 1911. 30;

in Standards IV and HI the numbers are 12 for 1909, 15 for 1910, and 14 for 1911. In the course of her report Miss Gregg says: ‘‘What the cost is per head each year it is impossible for me to say. I

have reason to believe that some parents would send us their gins at an earlier age than at present' were the school fees in the lowt r classes reduced. Tire advantage of girls entering earlier to the girls (and also to the parents) would be very great. At present children, through not coming to us soon enough, are heavily handicapped, especially for the public examinations not only in arithmetic but also in English grammar, and as these subjects are compulsory in all examinations under the present conditions, we have considerable difficulty in covering the 1 syllabus, as a great deal of tune is spent in teaching work which shouht have been taught years before we get the children. I myself examined the lower classes and found them very weak. —Referred to I inanee Committee to report upon. CORRESPONDENCE. The election of Mr. McGrath by the Municipal Council was received. Dr. T. C. Moore was re-elected chairman. Moneys spent during the last month :—Salaries £‘2! i 68. labour £3/14/-, insurance £-14/12/3. totalling £259'12/10. For the Junior School—£38 6'B.

Miss Gregg wrote asking what should be done in the case of Miss

Rutherford, whose appointment only lasted for a few months. This matter was left in the hands of the chairman to deal with. The action of the secretary in not attempting to appeal against the valuation of some land up country was approved of.

Mr. Sheath's house, which is open for tenancy, was left to the chairman to arrange. It was also decided to write asking how long the tenant would be prepared to take the house.

Accounts amounting to £204 1J 6 were passed for payment.
