ENGINE DRIVERS’ AWARD.
AGREEMENT IN NAPIER. The following are the details of the claims of the union and the conditions agreed upon, a brief report of which we published yesterday:— Thu proposed conditions of labour include the following clauses: (1) The day s work shall not exceed eight hours, and the employer to be subject to the provisions of •’The Factories Act. 19U1.’
Any time worked m any one day in extension of the hours prescribed in clause 1 shall be paid tor at the rate of time and a quarter for the first three hours, and time ami a half for all further time, until the usual hour for commencing work.
(3) Work done on New Near s Day, Easter Monday and the King’s Birthday to be paid for at the rate of time and a half, and Christmas Day, Good Friday and Sundays at the rate of double time. Drivers in factories to be entitled to the holidays given by any award affecting the factory, and work done on such holidays to be paid for at the rale of time and a half.
(4) The minimum rate of wages for drivers of stationary engines who are in charge of any boiler within the meaning of "The Inspector of Machinery Act, 1908,” and its amendments, for each day’s work, inclusive of the time occupied in getting up steam for the factory or works, to be as follows : — (a) Where the work that the en-gine-driver is employed to do requires that he shall hold a firstclass certificate as a stationary en-gine-driver, and he is the holder of a first-class certificate, 13 per hour ; (b) where the work that he is engaged to do requires that he shall hold a second class certificate as a stationary engine-driver or fireman, and he is the holder of a sec-ond-class certificate Lil, per hour ; (c) for work requiring a traction and locomotiee certificate for engines moved from place to place by their own motive power, 1 3 per hour.
(5) When certificated engine-driv-ers are engaged during any part of a <lay at engine-driving, and fill in tne ether part of the day at any other occupation, the day shall be paid for at the rate before mentioned according to the respective classes of the men. (6) Preference to unionists. River Engineers.-- The hours of work for river engineers shall not exceed 60 hours in any one week, exclusive of meal hours. Overtime.--All time worked in excess of the hours hereinbefore prescribed shall be paid for at the rate of not less than 1/6 per hour. Wages.—River engineers shall be paid not less than £3/10/- per week. The engagement of such worker shall be a weekly one, and the weekly wage shall be paid without deduction save for time lost by the workers’ own deiault. Holidays.—-Fourteen days holiday on full pay each year at such time as may be convenient to the employer shall be given to all engineers who have been in their emi ployers service for a period of one year.
No Discrimination. - -The employers shall not discriminate against members of the union, and shall not in the engagement or dismissal of men do anything directly or indirectly for the purpose of injuring the union.
As soon as the council sat Air. Hally explained that in other centres the business had been conducted privately and the results given to the press afterwards. This course was adopted.
CONDITIONS AGREED UPON
The council sat for an hour and a half, dining which the following conclusions were arrived at Exemption has been granted to freezing companies carrying on business in the Hawke’s Bay district, the reason being that they are already provided for in an award dealing with that particular industrv.
The Frimley Lanning Company is exempt conditionally upon their observing the same conditions in regard to engine-drivers as existed during the currency of the last award and the filing of the conditions with the Clerk of Awards at M’el’.'ngton.
Traction-engine Drivers.— A special clause has been drafted which provides that owners of traction engines are at liberty to contract with their men for payment at tonnage or piece-work rates, irrespective of the hours worked on any day. so long as the rate of wages prescribed in the award is paid.
I The drivers’ clause is retained. ; This operates, subject to the usual i conditions, within ten miles of the chief Post Office, Napier, and withj in one mile of the chief Post Office, | Hastings.
Engine drivers in newspaper officers are exempt from the holiday clause. The above are the special provisions that have been made to meet the requirements of the Hawke’s bay district, and the general terms of the award are in keeping with those already provided for in the latest award dealing with steam stationary, traction and locomotive engine-drivers.
River Engineers.—The conditions adopted in the last Auckland award also apply to this district. A proposal to include engineers on trawlers in the award was; struck out. The members of the council leave 1 for Palmerston North to-day, and hold a sitting there to-morrow.
