One of the best shots in the tournament. says the Manawatu Evening Standard, was plaved bv the veteran skip. Beatson. of Hastings On Friday afternoon a well-known Palmerston skip played as substitute m Beatson’s team and amidst a lot of good-humoured “chaff’ sent two jacks up the green instead of one. but before doing so he laid his silk umbrella on the turf near him. Mr. Beatson saw' his opportunity. He seized one of the jacks,and. amidst roars of laughter. dio\e it straight for the umbrella just missing the latter by the speed of the Palmerston man, who removed the umbrella in the nick of time. The incident created much merriment among the spectators w-ho appreciated Beatson’s faultless 'shot, ami at the same time admired the owner of the umbrella for Ins agiliti iii saving his property trim destruction.
