HASTINGS BRANCH. The annual meeting of the Hast-; ings branch of the New Zealand; Farmers’ Union was held in the . Carlton Club Hotel, Hastings, on 1 Saturday evening. Eight members were in attendance and Mr. A.; Masters presided. The report and balance-sheet showed that the year commenced with' a membership of 48 and ended with a total of 73. The financial; year commenced with a debit bal-: ance of £l3/3/11, and ended with a credit balance of £3/12/10. I Both w’ere adopted. ■
The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows :— Chairman, Mr. Thomas Talbot; vice-chairman, Mr. G. N. Thorn ; secretary, Mr. J. A. Fraser ; auditor, Mr. Eustace L<*ne; committee, Messrs. A. Masters, E. Lane, J. H. Taylor, W. Webb, J. Beatson. S. Chambers, C. Stubbs, A. Speers, and A. Millar; delegate to the provincial conference, Mr. T. Talbot.
On the motion ot Mr. Eustace Lane, seconded by Mr. A. Masters, it was decided to forward the following remit to the Provincial Con-j ference: “(a) That all applicants for Crown Lands who are landless and qualified by the law to ballot for land be passed for the ballot without any other test than the declaration ; (b) that the Advances to; Settlers Act be so amended as to enable any landless person eligible for | the ballot to take up land having ■ an undeveloped value; (c) that the! Government be urged to restore to! the statute book that Liberal legis-j lation recently repealed which em-j powers the purchase of land by the; State at the price indicated by the! value produced.”
