FIRES.

AT OPUNAKE. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Hawera, April 7. Fire at Opunake early this morning destroyed Henteny’s store, the Loan and Mercantil’e Co.’s store, and other small premises. THE STRATFORD BLAZE. Stratford, April 7. All those injured in the Trocadero fire yesterday morning are progressing well and are in no immediate danger. It is difficult to obtain details of insurances, so many small interests are affected. The building was owned by Mr. H. A. Prebble, value £5OOO, and insured for £lOOO in the Guardian and £l6OO in the Commercial Union. The furniture of Prebble was valued at over £9OO, and insured for £375 in the London and Lancashire.

OUTBREAK IN EMERSON

STREET, NAPIER.

At 11.30 last evening an incipient blaze was discovered in the workshop of Mr. G. Nicholson, cabinetmaker, etc., at the rear of his shop in Emerson street. The alarm was given promptly but it seems that either the wrong information was given or it was misunderstood, for the brigade proceeded to the Theatre Royal under the impression that the premises of Mr. Nicholson, the caretaker, were in flames. On arrival at the source of the trouble lengths >f hose were run out from Emerson street, and the fire was quickly subdued. The origin of the fire is not definitely known, but it had some hold amongst a quantity ot dressed flax and joiners’ refuse. The workshop is a not very substantial structure of framework and galvanised iron, so that repairs will probably be inexpensive. A quantity of tools and materials have been damaged, however, but altogether the damage can be reckoned as slight. The insurance on the workshop and its contents could not be ascertained last night, but that on the front shop, which, of course, was entirely uninjured, is £4OO in the Roval Insurance Office.
