SHEEP DOG TRIALS

Class 111, the final competition, the huntaway, was started shortly after one o’clock yesterday. There were ,as in the other classes at these trials many dogs entered for the event. Results :— CLASS 111.

Huntaway, 340 yards, dogs to hunt away sheep between three lots of flags. Time, lOmin. First prize £lO, second £7, third £4, fourth £2. Maximum points : Huntaway 10, under command 10, style 6, noise 4. A. W. Mclllwraith’s Don (huntaway 8, undei- command 10, style 5, noise 4; >ptal, 27).... 1 C. McDonald’s Cook (huntaway 6, under command 7, style 3, noise 4; total 20) .... 5 G. Smith’s Fly (huntaway 6, under command 6, style 3, noise 3; total, 27) 6 SHEEP DOG SHOW. After the trials a show of sheep dogs was held in which there was a large entry. The results were: — Beardie Class.—B. Douglas’ Sandy 1. Smooth Haired Collie Class. —R. Davidson’s Fly 1. Long Coated Collie Class.—H. Nicholson’s Sharp 1. SHEPHERDS’ RACE.

A shepherds’ race was also held, and was laid over the huntaway course, starting from the ring, across the flat, up the hill and back, a total distance of 1050 yards. Mr. R. D. D. McLean was judge. The results were :—Chambers 1, Small 2, Arundle 3.

On behalf of the club, Mr. R. D. D. McLean thanked Mr. McDonald for the valuable services he had given, and the day was ended with cheers given for the judge, Mr. McLean, the secretary (Mr. W. McKinnon) and for Mr. Phil.' Dolbel, who kindly lent the ground.

Among the visitors present at the sheep dog trials at Taradale yesterday were :—Messrs. D. Whyte (Tikokino), Thomas Webber, R. Thom (Takapau), Harvey Rymer (Meanee), W. Mcßobbie (Patoka), Cyril Haultain (Awapawanui), M. J. Kelly (Elsthorpe), M. McDonald (Puketapu), D. Small (Taupo), J. lA. McFarlane (Waiterenui), Bert I Harmer (Dannevirke), R. Grant (Waipuk), W. Stewart, T. Parker (Napier), C. G. Beard (president of the Te Pohue Dog Trial Club), M. C. and D. Black (Endale), J. W. Clarke (Central Otago), P. Dolbel, IP. O’Dowd and R. J. Neagle. Mr. Mclvor, secretary of the Mohaka Sheep Dog Trial Club, was also i present, with Mrs. Mclvor and family. The ladies present included : I Mesdames R. Dolbel (Napier), New- ; born (Napier), R. C. Dolbel, E. | Glenny; Misses Woods (2), R. I Hunt, N. Ripley and E. Richard- ' son. | MOHAKA COLLIE DOG TRIAL. i Our travelling representative has been shown the gold medal presented by Mr. D. J. Fleming to the Mohara Collie Dog Trial Club for dogs gaining most points in classes 1,2, and 3, different dogs in each class. Nominations are to be sent to Secretary Mclvor, Mohaka, before starting. As soon as the trials are over a show will be held for different classes of dogs. A shepherd’s hack race has been arranged for which valuable prizes have been I provided. The distribution of prizes will take place on the evening of I the show.

The Central H.B. Sheep Dog Trial Club meeting was concluded yesterday, under ideal conditions. JUDGE’S EEMARKS. Class 111. W. Mcllwfaith’s Don completed course in first-class style, and was under extra good command. C. Thom’s Glen also completed course, and did creditable work throughout. Other dogs in this class all did good useful work. POINTS PRIZES. The points prizes were allotted as follows: — Mr. P. Dolbel’s silver cup £<» dog gaining most points at meeting in any class —J. W. Clarke (Otago). Mr. P. Dolbel’s gold medal for neatest head in Class I.—W. Whyte,, whose dog also won the special gold medal for two years in succession, and his sire and dam have special prizes for the neatest head all over the Dominion for the past, seven years. Mr. A. McLeod’s gold medal for maiden dog gaining most points in Class I. —P. McDonald. Mr. McDonald also won Mr. C, O’Donoghue’s special trophy, C. W. Davis’s trophy, and Mr. J. C. McVay’s trophy. Other prizewinners were: — Best team of 3 dogs (Mr. T. McRae’s cup, Mr. T. Moynihan’s trophy, and Mr. W. Whyte’s trophy)—W. Mcllwraith, sen. Mr. R. Ross’s trophy—G. Smith. Mr. T. 'Parker’s : ttophy—J- W. Clarke. ... " Messrs. Ringland Bros.’ trophy —McFarlane. Mr. E. H. Rickett’s trophy—J. Gillespie. Mr. H. J. Grieve’s trophy—A. F. McKenzie. Messrs.
