The Hospitality Committee of the Victoria League to-dday resolved to undertake to find accommodation for not less than fifty members of the Sheffield Choir during their visit to Wellington from June Ist, and also to pledge itself to endeavour to find accommodation for the remaining members of choir up to 200. The meeting expressed a desire to co-operate with the Musical Union, Choral Society. Liedertafel, Orchestral Society, Yorkshire Society, and Auxiliary Choir.

MAORI TYPHOID EPIDEMIC.

Gisborne, Mar. 29.

The Hon. A. T. Ngata, who passed through here to-aay from the north en route for Wellington via Wairarapa, told a ! ‘Times” reporter that the typhoid outbreak amongst the Maoris on the East Coast north of Gisborne was not being quelled as rapidly as expected. The difficulties in the way of .suppressing the outbreak were very great, and there was only one nurse for the whole district—a vast one. He had ordered from Auckland the necessary marquees, tents, etc., for the establishment of a segregation camp, probably in the vicinity of Tuparoa, and hoped by this uteans to keep the epidemic more in hand.

METEORIC CAREER.

Auckland, Mar. 29.

A contractor named Thomas Brownlee, who was recently adjudged bankrupt, was charged at the Police Court to-day with bringing about his bankruptcy by rash and hazardous speculation. It was stated that the accused had had a meteoric and disastrous career as a contractor. In twelve months he had entered into right contracts. From three of these he had made a profit of £5B, but on the others he had lost over £lOOO. He had started with a capital 'of £25, and his liabilities were now between £lBOO and £2OOO. He had paid a dividend of 5/6 or 5/9 in the £l. It was urged, that there was no criminal intent, but the Magistrate said that this did not absolve the accused from liability. A sentence of 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed.
