HOCKEY. HAWKE’S BAY HOCKEY UMPIRES ASSOCIATION.

The annual general meeting of the above association was held in the Hastings Hotel last night, Mr. G. R. King presiding. There were also present Messrs. R. R. Carr, Fail (3\ Bamforth (2), Bell, McDougall, Melhuish, F. Thomas, Groves, McGoldrick and D’Anvers. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted: —President, Mr. G. R. King; secretary and treasurer, Mr. A. L. Fail; delegate to the association, Mr. A. L. Fail; management committee, Messrs. Groves, Melhuish, Bell and F. Thomas; board of examiners, Messrs. King, Fail, Bell and C. L. Thomas.

An alteration in the new rules concerning the facing of sticks met with tiie approval of all present. The rule distinctly states that “the head of the stick (i.e., the part below the top of the splice) shall not be edged with, or have insets or fittings of hard wood or any other substance, nor shall there be any sharp edges or dangerous splinters.” The rule also provides that the extremity of the stick must not be cut square, or pointed, but must have rounded edges. By this rule the leather binding, which has hitherto been greatly used, will not be permitted. The association also decided to length of the ladies* skirts. This rule provides that skirts must be at least eight inches from the ground. A number of gentlemen were elected as members of the association. It is to be regretted that more enthusiasts in this game do not come forward and offer their services as umpires as they would be welcomed. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
