CRICKET.

AUSTRALIA v. SOUTH AFRICA Sydney, Mar. 6. The weather was fine and ho*, and the wicket hard and fast. Zulch and Pegler resumed. Pegler was inclined to hit out, but Zulch was very slow. The first SO appeared in 4-min. At 26 Pegler tapped Hordern to Cotter at midon. He plainly did not under stand the ball. Hordern soon had Zulch in difficulties. When 22 Carter missed an easy chance of stumping, but fumbled the ball. Faulkner appreciated Kellaway’s bowling, and hit 29 in three overs. At 29 Zulch had another life, and should have been run out, but Tnunper mulled the ball. Again at 39 he lifted Cotter straight to Kelleway in the slips, but was dropped. After this he pegged along, his 50 taking 140 minutes. Faulkner stands out prominently above all the other South Africans as a batsman. He completed a unique record, having aggregated 100 in each test. He compares favourably with the best Australians. He is not so brilliant as Triimper, but is safer. Except for his right hand style, he resembles Bardsley. The 200 was scored in 237 minutes. At 92 Cotted bowled Faulkner with an extra fast delivery. He had batted 107 minutes, and hit 10 fours. Zulch was again let off at 69, when he drove Hordern hard to Hill at mid-on, and was missed. Nourse gave another exhibition of slow batting, half an hour yielding only 9. Zulch’s 100 took 223 minutes. Nourse continued slowly to 28, when he was caught at cover by Cotter off | Whitty. He batted 62 minutes.! Stricker was next. The third cen - ‘ tury took 244 minutes. After mak- I ing the century, Zulch sparkled up • for a while. Stricker played the I usual slow game. The Australian I fielding was below standard, Hor- j dem being the worst offender, j Even Macartney was faulty, i Zulch*s 150 took 295 minutes. He | was then bowled in trying to pull a short ball from Ransford. He j hit 15 fours. His innings was l good but flukey, with an occasion- • al brilliant drive.
