ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER.
THE WAGES OF SIN. [pep. press association.] Auckland, Feb. 28. William Osborne was charged in the Police Court with manslaughter in connection with the death of Mary Gilchrist, residing in White Street. Sub-Inspector Hendry stated the woman led an immoral life and kept accused in idleness. On December 20th accused beat her so badly thaf her body was bruised and two ribs broken. Accused was Fried for the assault, when the woman tried to make out the assault was her fault and not the fault of prisoner, who pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. On January 7th the woman was found dead. A post mortem showed that death had resulted from the rupture of a blood-vessel, accelerated by broken ribs, but the condition of her body was such that she could* not have lived long in any case. A boy of sixteen years deposed to seeing the row in the house when accused hit deceased, who was put to bed, and later was found on the floor. At this stage the case was adjourned until Wednesday.
