THEFT.

[per press association.] Wellington, Dec. 21. A man named Bernard A. Gifford, who had eluded arrest for several days, and after whom the police had had two exciting chases, w’as brought before the Police Court to-day charged with, the theft of a step-ladder belonging to Messrs. Smith and Smith, and breaking into the residence of Mr. J D. Sievwright, Wellington Terrace, and stealing therefrom a watch and jewellery to the value of C 29. He pleaded not guilty. Application by the police for a remand was granted, and bail allowed. accused £lOO and two securities each.
