London, January 24. Semi-official Continental newspapers are trying to discredit Viscount Craubotne’a statement regarding Britain’s attitude in count -tion with the SpanUhAmerican war.

American newspapers acknowledge England as America’s best friend in national emergency. Mr Chaunoey Depew states that no alliance existed with Britain, but there was an understanding that in the event of trouble America would not aid England’s enemies by any aot in any part of the world.
