CHINA.

CABLEGRAMS. fp,B PBIBS ASSOCIATION.—OOPTRIBHT.]

AN AUDIENCE. London, January 24. The Chinese Emperor has granted an audience to the foreign Ministers, who were struck by hia pathetic appearance, physical weakness, and profound melancholy. Sir Ernest Satow, British Ambassador, informed the Emperor that King Edward sincerely desired that the independence and the integrity of China would be maintained intact, and that the prosperity and happiness of the Chinese would be fostered by the Emperor’s Cnlighted rule and the removal of obstacles to the free exchange of commodities and better interior communication.

Prince Ching acted as spokesman. The Emperor remained as silent as an automaton. The Dowager Empress was invisible behind a screen in the audience chamber.

The Rev. A. Favier, Roman Catholic Bishop at Peking, is apprehensive that the attack on the missions and converts in Mongolia is the result of Prince Tuan’s incitement to avenge his son’s rejection as the heir-apparent.

DISCUSSION OP REFORM. Received January 26, 4,35 p.m, London, January 26. The Dowager and Council are discussing Yuanshihka’s proposal to appoint six foreigners to advise on international law finance, military, naval, parliamentary, and domestic Government affairs. The success achieved in Japan by a similar plan is instanced.
