A severe earth tremor is reported to have occurred at Cheviot at 3.15 a,m, on Sunday.
Chmstchueoh, Monday. The Premier visited Cheviot to-day, and met the relief committee in the evening, when a report was presented stating that 60 applicants assessed their damage by the earthquake at £3310, and there were other applications, some of which the committee had yet to investigate, and in other cases thought the applicants in a position to bear the loss. The relief funds in Christchurch amounted to about £BOO, and would probably reach £IOOO. An expert builder estimated the cost of roughly repairing the houses of those who moat needed help at £765, and the chattels destroyed in those oases worth about £ISOO. The Premier said that after what the colony had done in other cases he felt that if the public subscription could be raised to £IOOO the Government would take the reaposibility of providing the other £I2OO required.
