POHUI SCHOOL MATTERS.
Sir,— To show you the way people are 1 treated in the country, I bog yon to publish the enclosed letter cent by me to the Education Board on the 12th of June last. I read the reports of the last meet- ' ing of the Board, and saw no account of my letter having been read by it Knowing, sir, that your columns are open to all persons having a just claim, I 1 hope you will assist me in obtaining the 1 rights due to my children and to those of ! other children in the Bnrrounding district. Could I not compel the Board to 1 assist me in providing education for my 1 children? I believe there are many aided schools in New Zealand with an • average attendance of five or six, but I ; have not the Gazette showing this. > I believe the Qaaclte report I refer to ' was published within the last few months. ; — I am, &c, ' H. BODLET. > P.S.— The 30 miles referred to in my I letter to the Board should read " 20," > [copy.] 1 The Chairman and Members of the 1 Hawke's Bay Education Board.—Gentle- ' men,— l have to request the Board to re- ' consider their decision as to the appoint- ' ment of a certificated teacher at a salary s of £60 per annum, for Pobui, on the ■ following grounds ; — There is not a school • within 30 miles of Pohui. I have a ' family of nine children of school age, and ' claim that they are entitled to be edu- ■' cated by the Government in the same ' manner as town children are. Two ' boarders at my place also attend the ' Pohui school. I erected the sohool-house 1 at my own expense. Miss Ingleton has 1 been highly recommended as a teacher for 1 Pohui. Her salary is .£4O per annum with board and lodging. There are other 1 children in the district of sohool age who :. do not attend, and I have no power to ' deal with them. If a certificated teaoher ' were appointed by the Board at a salary ', of £60, as suggested, she would have to pay her own board and lodging, and would consequently receive less than I : am now paying Miss Ingleton. Should the Board favorably reconsider the above matter, and appoint Miss Ingleton vice 1 Miss Williams, as requested, I undertake that if her work is not approved of by ( the Inspector at the next examination i i will comply with the Board's resolution '■ of the 18th of April, provided I oin obtain 1 a teacher at the salary.— l have, &0., Henky Bodlev.
