HASTINGS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Thursday, January 12. Present — His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Beecroft, Crosse, Dennett, Hughes, and Dr. Linney. Leave of absence was granted to, Cra. Beilby, Murdoch, and Williams. PETITION. A petition referring to the erection of gas lamps in certain positions was presented by Cr. Dennett, and referred to the Public Worljs Committee. overseer's report. The road overseer reported that the foSowing works had been completed: — Picket fonce at the railway crossing; concrete kerb and channelling in Warrenstreet j and repairing the Albert Hotel reservoir. He recommended that the work of tarring and sanding footpaths be now proceeded with at an approximate cost of .£2l 17s 10d.— Adopted. SLAUQHTEuHOUSES. The inspector of slaughterhouses reported that all yards were in a clean and satisfactory condition. Cattle slaughtered during the month ; — 6l head large cattlei 438 sheep, and 80 pigs, and 87 oatte, impounded during the month. — Eeceived. RANGES, AND NUISANCES* REPORT. The inspeotor had occasion during tho month to complain of certain premises, and especially of three piggeries. He had given notice to the owners of the latter that the nuisance must be removed, bnt no notioo had been taken. The butcher's premises complained of had been put into a satisfactory condition. — IJotice to be given to the owners of the pigstyes that unless satisfactorily cleaned within one week the pigstyes must be abolished. FIRE INSPECTOR'S REPORT.. The inspector reported that all plant was in good working order. The water supply was good, and Mr Gill, the new turncock, had carried out his duties very satisfactorily. The new hose imported was good. He suggested that steps be taken in reference to improved fire esoapes at hotels and public buildings ; that when a license is granted to the proprietor of the theatre it should be stipulated that two firemen be told off to attend on nights of performances. During the past six months there' had been four calls, one email one. and three false alarms. Cr, Linney etated that he should give notice of motion that the manual engine should be sold and a small secondary steamer purchased in lieu. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and dealt with : — Napier Gas Company, insisting on the terms of their previous offer, if the new arrangements for lighting as suggested are to be carried out, the contract to be for a term °f seven years, — Cr. Linney said he should oppose it, as before seven years were out the town would retfuiro gasworks belonging to the town. — Cr. Dennett askod if further lamps were required would the cost be reduced? — The Mayor explained that the coßt would be. — <-!r. Crossjß moved that the contract be entered into, The Council would not be justified within such a period of entering into such an onterpiise.—Cr. Donnett seconded the motion. —Carried. — It was ordered that the deed of agreement l>o signed on behalf of the Council, Commissioner of Taxeß, enclosing remittance for £140 12s (id, subsidy under Local Bodies Act. — Received. Commissioner Crown Land, agreeing to accept .£l2 10s for land taken for sewerage purposes,— Received,.

Donald M'Lean, asking Council to extend sewer up Lyndon-road. — Overseer to to furnish ostimate. The report of the Hospital Site Committee was received, but consideration was adjourned for a fuller meeting. Accounts were passed for payment as follows :— General £139 2s Id, loan account £6 13s sd, bank overdraft .£2744 13s 7d. Tie Council then resolved itself into a special meeting to fix the day for the weekly half -holiday for the year, Wednesday being decided upon aa at present. The Mayor gave notice of motion of a new bye-law to compel owners of new buildings to erect brick, stone, or concrete partition walls within certain areas. A motion by Cr. Dennett that persons should be allowed to depasture their cattlo on the roads for a short period to eat off the long growth was not seconded. The meeting then adjourned.
