THE SOUTHERN CROSS.
Sir, — In answer to the query of "F.8.W." allow me to observe: The ] brightest star in the Southern Cross is , known as Alpha Cruees, and its declina- , tion is 62deg 32min lseo from the celestial ] equator. Now if a person were situated in 62deg 22min lsee his vision would ] extend OOdeg on all sides. And if to ( 62deg 31min lseo we add 27deg 2ftnin , 69seo we get OOdeg, and 27deg 27min £ 59sec would be the highest range north . from which the star could be seen, not -, allowing for refraction. — I am, &c, Y. Napier, December 12th, 1898.
