On May 10th during a heavy gale the rudderbead was also carried away, und as it was not pOßSlblej owing to tho hoavy weather, to make any tompor*ry repairs to the rudder >arge ropes were paid orer thebtern to ao6 for steering purposes, bnt tho contrivance had afterwards the woatber modtrated. so that chains were gob round the rudder, taken along to thuoapstan on the fore part of the poop, and the vessel was stoored by them for a few days when the oapstan carried away, 1? 1 le ! w ,P rB th6n ringed from the steering chains to tho mainmast, and It was decide d to Make lor Hobarti. but the wind coming fair sue was kept on her course and made Otago Heads on Baturday night, but was blown as far as Timaru by the heavy south-west gale.
