The School Committee have strong objections to the appointment of Mr Burns, of Petone, as firat assistant in place of their own ohoice, Mr Darroch. Some members allege that religions influence is at work. After a warm debate the committee deputed Mr Hogg to get Sir Robert Stout's opinion. Notice was also given to get further legal opinion as to the construction of the Education Aot. The Board decided to Insist on Mr Barns because of his standing higher education* ally than Mr Darroch.
