Following the example of the seamen, the ooal lumpers are demanding an increase of wages, and have requested b conference with their employers. Tho Argus say a that an unweloomo development 1b ooourring in connection with the trade between New Zealand and West Australia. The Union Company is carrying produoe from New Zealand to Sydney at lower rates than to Melbourne, while tbe lines trading from Sydney and Melbourne to West Australia are charging the same rates from both portß. The result is that produce oan be exported from Neve Zealand to West Australia more oheaply via Sydney than by Melbourne, and the latter is thus losiug both trade and its mercantile prestige.
