During a recent visit to Japan, a Sydney merchant succeeded In inducing toe Russian merchants who supply the Busslan naval and penal stations at Vladivostok with meat, to five some Australian beef a trial. He has just forwarded an experimental shipment by the Changaha, and believeß it is possible to establish a large trade. TJp'to the present snpplies have been obtained chiefly from Africa. The financial editor ot the Sydney I Morning Heraid sees no purpose to be I served by commenting on the Bank ot ' New Zealand, other than that it Is well to make the best of a bad business, and convert it as quickly as possible into a good institution. (Reoelvwi September 6, 12.45 a.m.) The fire in Block 11, at tho Proprietary mine, has so far subsided, that it Is intended to open one of the shafts next week, Kffjrta are also being made to reach the seat of the fire fiom the underground workings. The bush fires are unabated, and are devastating large areas in all parts, being assisted by the prevailing high wind. The South Coast dairying districts have been swept and Berry and other townships encircled, and were only saved by the residents organising and fighting the flames day and night. Several outlying houses and schools were destroyed. Miles of, mountain ranges are blazing presenting a magnificent spectacle. Fifty square miles have been devastated by bash fires In the Kempsey district. At the annual session of the Presbyterian Federal Assembly the Rev. W. Fleming, of Brisbane, was ohosen Moderator. In the Assembly, the Premier oald nothing more would be heard of the bill to increase Mr Eddy'a salary. The placing of the increase on the Estimates was a mistake, and it would be with, drawn after he bad. signed an agreement to give Mr Bddy £4000 a year, subject to the approval of Parliament. Mr Eddy bad cabled from London that he did not wish the bill to be submitted, and it would not be. Mr Rose moved to strike ont the exemptions in the Land and Income Tax, bnt it was negatived by 77 to 14. Discuseion on the exemption clause Is still proceeding;,
