SHOOTING.

THE COLEMAN SHIELD. THE NAVALS"icORE A WtN. The competition of the various companies in Hawke's Bay for, the hantieomo tirophy presenter! by Mr J. fl, Coleman took place on the local range yesterday. The competitors were favored with Qaeea's weather. Captain Chicken was in charge of the men, assisted by Uaptaln Smith and Lieutenants Hughes, Stabba, and Thomson. The officers are to be complimented upon the manner in which the proceedings were managed, not a hitch occurring, one ehot only being challenged. . Aftnr the parade and salute on the Marine-parade tbe squads were marched to the range and firing was commenced at 10,30 continuing Incessantly throughout the day, the last) shot being discharged at 4.15 p.m., not a bad day's work for SO men. In all 1200 rounds were fired, A light breeze blew across the range and the sun glared down on the inner harbor throwing a blinding reflection in the eyes of tbe shootlsts, and this no donbt ac» counts in a great) degree for the poor markmanebip displayed. A tithe finish of the 200 and 300 yards there was only a difference of 14 points between the highest and lowest of the competitor squads, bat the 400 yards range cracked the Battery np. As seen by the scores below tbe Navala won by 22 points from the Hastings Rifles, the Napier Rifles being only one point behind Hastings. The shooting on the whole was Very poor, not one of the men .averaging centres. The conditions ware '2oo yards standing, 300 kneeling, and 400 any military position ; fire shots at each range ; regulation targets and scoring. The highest Individual scores of each company were Gunner M, Franklin, of tbe Navals, 42 (19 being put on at 400, or one Wow the possible) ; Private Humphries, Haatinpa Rifleß, 41 ; Corporal Pirie, Napier Rifles, 38 ; Gunner Marshall, F Battery, 39 (who.thereby won a mndsome silver medal for the highest | score in the battery in this competition). The men lunched in squada at the Koyal Hotel, a capital spread being provided, which was done fnll justice to. At the conclusion ot the firing threci cheers were given by the assembled competitors for Mr Coleraan, the donor of the ehield. The scores were as follows :—
