The Bmall steamer Waitoa, trading to VVaitoa South, struck a rock at the en-

The Alameda sails for Sydney at 1 o'clock to-morrow morning. Tbe steamer Waitoa floated off at high water at Buckland Point bnt little injured.

A deputation from the Westport Harbor Board interviewed the Premier on the necessity for procnrlng a tug for the harbor and constructing a wharf for loading Goal for household purposes. The deputation also suggested that the money now advanced by the government on the security of the Board's debentures should be converted into a loan on the English money market, on the lines laid down in the Westport Harbor Board Act of 1881. The Premier gave the deputation an attentive hearing and appeared favorable to their proposals.

At a representative meeting of fire insurance offices it was resolved, in reply to a letter from the Insurers' Protective Association asking for a conferecca relative to redaction of fire rates, that the association be informed that a meeting of all offices will be held in Melbourne at an early date for the purpose of establishing the principles and general basis of rating for the colony. The association U asked to forward a statement of its views with regard to the special features oi Wellington, which will bo placed before the meeting. It is Improbable that Government will frrant any prospecting license in the Uriwera country until Government is in a position to deal with the country as a gold field.

The Cabinet has decided to permit Qoeenßland cattle ships to come to and coal in New Zealand wateis, but to keep them in quarantine) while here, to prevent them coming alongside any wharf or taking any cattle from New Zealand.

A motion for establishing a city market and also one for having a paid permanent fire brigade (the cost to be defrayed by the corporation, fire insurance companies, and the Government) were likewise referred to a committee, A propnsal to level the hills between Wellington Terrace for a recreation gronnd wns withdrawn.

A young woman named Madge Robinson, formerly a barmaid, threw herself Into tbe harbor to-night, bnt was rescued. She will be charged with attempted Bulcide.

At tbe S.M. Conrt tbia morning George Feck was brought up on a warrant from Auckland charged with wife desertion. Accused admitted hftving left informant,

and also said that he had tince beeu married in Chrlstchurcb. Inspector Brohara asked for a remand, in order to inquire into the alleged bigamy. Accused made a statement to tbe eiiect that though he had gone through tbe marriage ceremony with informant in Anckland, she knew that he bad a wife living in England. A remand was granted till May 30th.

Burglars broke into the Museum land niput and stole specimens, mostly gold, valued at £50.

By a fire at Sydenham this morning tbe shops of Messrs Dnrham (bootmaker) and J. Nixon (tailor) were almost totally de> Btioyed. The property wan owned by Mr J. Morgan, It is understood Mr Nixon is uninsured.

The calendar for the criminal sittings of the Snpreme Court, which opens on Monday, contains 20 charges against 18 persons. At a meeting of tbe Charitable Aid Board to-day in was reported that the list of outdoor recipients had increased very mucb, and tbe number was now the highest on record in the Board's register, being 507 cases, comprising 1724 persons relieved, in April, as aealnat 4 CO (1499) far March, and sbowiog an increase ni compared with April of last year of 79 cr.pes, totalling 325 more person;. The total number of persons relieved during the montb was 1999, and the expenditure £1030.

Dunedin, Wednesday.

Representations have been made to the Mayor nnd Mr Pinkerton, M.H It,, that there are 250 unemployed in Danedln at present. Mr Fish prominnd to wire to the Minister for Pablio Works immediately.

Mr Carew, 8.M., pave judgment to-day lv a case in which the City Ccrporation sought) to recover from the Koalyn Council an auctioneer's license fee paid by Mr Bowler. Mr Bowler is tbe auctioneer for Messrs Wright, Stepheoßon and Co. , bat many of his sales are held in the country, and he is away months at a time. He resides in Roslyn. Mr Carew said considering the large cxleat to which Mr Bowler was nway, it could not be said he had his usual place of business at Dunedin.
