ONEHUNGA LARRIKINISM.

Atrckr-Affri, Tuesday, At an extraordinary meeting of the Onehhbga Borough Council last evening, disgraceful Bcenes occurred, Mrs Mayor Yates cleared the room, and the crowd retaliated. and turned dnt the gas, A crowd of IPO or 200 spectators was present at the special meeting. When the meeting commenced, Mrs Yates announced from the Mayoral chair that the public must withdraw. The public would not at first leave the room, whereupon Mrs Yates left the chair, and amidsb great exeitemenb rtehi'cd the foofh with con< aiderable .ifficnlty, using personal exertions to put the more obstreperous Individuals out. This clearance was no easy task for her, and was not accomplished until she had, in puttiog her head out of the Council room window to look for the police, rnn the gauntlet of the jeers of that part of the crowd she had put outside, who had been admonished by Cr. Tapp to " Mind the chucker out." She had, however, declared that she would make an example of any person who waited or refused to go. The room was cleared of all biit three Pressmen. The crowd all this timo Were jeering outside or hammering at and shaking the door. Mrs Yates demanded that a policeman be sent for, and leaving the chair she re opened the Council Chamber door, and threatened tbe crowd that if they did not clear down she would Bend for the police. Meanwhile two sections of councillors were wrangling amongst themselves, Jackson averring that the procedure of her Worship was most nnnsnal, while Hastie declared that the other was at the root of the trouble, md that his action was brutal. Jackson said his colleague ought to be ashamed 3f himself, and he would submit to the ruling of the Mayor, bnt not to one who was ignorant of her duties. If his brother :ouncillors liked to lie down in the gutter md let her tread on them he would not. Fhe uproar continuing, tho Mayor went )ut to put down the noise, and :he business was gone on with inder great difficulties. Suddenly the »as was turned off at the meter by the srowd, and the room was left in darkness imidst great uproar and cheering from ihe outside. As quickly as Bhe could ;ravel, Mrs Vates made her way to the loorway, threatening to report the police 'or allowing such things. She turned on :be eras again, and then victoriously -eated herself in the Mayoral chair, and ;he business was proceeded with. Subsequently a hot dtscassion took place, md the Mayor applied the closure to Cr. Jackson. The latter insisting on projeedlng, the Mayor said : " Hold yonr toDgue, for goodness sake. They talk lbout women, but I never heard any one jf them talk like you." After the Council meeting the Mayor and members were subject to warm demonstrations at the aands of the crowd. Mrs Yates addressed tho crowd from the window, and told them they were a disgrace tn the town md to the mothers that reared them. As she left the building she waa hooted and yelled at.
