Sydney, Tuesday. The Berrigan Farmers' Union carried a motion declaring that duties imposed for the purpose of encouraging wheat growing had failed in their object, and that Farmers' Unions throughout the colony should be communicated with as to the advisableness of Bweeping them away. There is expected to be a strong agitation in the country for a retnrn to the Freetrade policy. The lioyal Tar will airlve from Adelaide shortly, and she will take 200 single men to New Australia in Paraguay. Owing to the warning nature of cable messages from the new settlement, it has been decided to delay sending the women for six months, pending inquuiea into the truth of the allegations. Over 3000 members are enrolled, and the committee contemplate the purchase of one or two more vessels. In connection with the Uank Notes Bill which will come on in the Legislative Assembly for the second reading tomorrow, the Premier has had returns prepared which show that the trade of the colony does not absorb afa one time more than two million pounds' worth of i bank notes. According to the latest returns the banks hold specie of the value of £5,697,000, and other assets of the valne of £44,656,000 with which to secure two millions of notes, None o| this security under the new bill will be destroyed until the bank notes are reduced, as the notes will be a first charge. At present 2,520,000 sovereigns are being moved about from branch to branch -at great cost to meet) liabilities which may acorue. The making of notes a legal tender in the couuory will avoid this. The Minister lor Public Works proposes to expend £300,000 during the nexb twelve mouths on sewerage and other works, thus providing employment) for 2000 men.
