A CRUEL SPORT.

y. Sib,— lt is much to be regretted that numbers of people on the Kuataniwba ?;-.' . plains now find pleasure in sport (as they ft^ callit) of a orael kind. Juet as in ilie gr<, old pagan days men were cast to lions to f^ annuse the spectators, now we see nut fs:;;mly men bnti young girls galloping alter pp: a number of dogs in order to see .them jp^ic'atob and t«ar to pieces a harmless hare,

and her distressing ories give'fthem the greatest delight. Certainly if the hares do mischief or are required for food they should be killed, but why take pleasure in seeing their death ? We kill sheep for mutton, but what would you think if every time a sheep was killed all tho family went down to see it die, and the feet of tbe poor animal were actually cut off and preserved by young girls as a memorial ? Hare hunting is worse than vivisection, in that it serves no purpose but to harden the hearts of those engaged in it. If onn of your ministers .should treat tbe subject from the pulpit, we may, I am sure, reckon on the sympathy of many, and at any rate of Mercy. April 26, 1893.
