Sydney, Tuesday. Both the Union Company of New Zealand and the Orient Company have represented to tbe Colonial Government Unit they ouybt not to lie overlooked in the arrangements for the Vancouver mail service, and stating that they were both prepared to enter for the service. Mr J, Mills, of the Union Company, to day, In the course of an interview, stated that owing to the Monowai being required for the intercolonial trade, arrangements were proceeding to replace her in the San Francisco line with a faster vessel of 4000 tons burden. He expected that the new vessel would be running before next season, and she would do the journey from Ban Francisco to Sydney in 21 days, (Reoeived April 12, 12.45 a.m.) Tbe sentence of death passed on Mrs Makln for child murder has been com* muted to imprisonment for life. The date for the execution of Makin has not been fixed pending the consideration of a petition of appeal to the Privy Council on points that have been decided by tbe full Court.
