[BY TELEGRAPH.] Wanganui, Thursday. Splendid weather prevailed to-day for the first day's races of the Wanganui Jockey Club's antnnin meeting. The racing was good and the attendance firatclrss. Robson, the pilot of Glenloth in the last Melbourne Cup, was present, and had the good fortune to steer St. Katherlne to victory in the Cup, which proved one of the best race 3 ever seen on the TVanganui course. About £5500 was put through the totalisator. The following are the results :— FIRST HANDICAP HURTILES, Of 300 aow. Mr Woodley's Empire, 9at 81b (Hlggins) 1 Mr Wilson's Disturbance, 9at 101 b (Mitchell) 2 Mr Lawry's Gondolier, lOat 91b (Redmond) 3 -Paradox, Oaklands, and Lady Leger also ran. On the fall of the nag Paradox aad Empire jumped away with the lead, closely followed by Gondolier, and they crossed the first hurdle together. They raced until the third obstacle was negotiated, when it could be seen that Paradox was a long way off her old form, and Gondolier snpplanted her. Coming past the stand the second time Empire was taking the field along at a merry bat, with Gondolier on his quarters; then came Lady Leger, Oaklands, and Disturbance, with Paradox bringing up the rear. Going along 1 bhe back stretch Disturbance made a forward move, and made a big bid for victory, but the son of Natator, stalling him off easily, won by three or four lengths, Gondolier a good third. HANDICAP HACK HUKDLES, Of 30 Boys. Mr Woodley'a Sister, lOst 21b (Higgins) 1 Mr R. Ross's Little Tom, 9st 71b (Andiaon) 2 Mr Duncan's Kareua, lOat 41b (Duncan) 3 — Bradshaw, Nat, Respond, Omahu, Manine, Broadleaf, and Hillarion also ran. Sister was first over the sticks, with Buncu at her heels. Passing the second obstacle Karewa challenged and stuck to Sister nntil the round of the bend, when Little Tom came np, hut failed to beat Sister, and the mare won by about three lengths, Tlme,2Jmin. Davies's g g Musket, 4yrs, 63t 91b (Connop) 3 —Retina (83t), Rosefeldt (7at 21b), Queen of Trumps (7st 121 b), Revolution (7st 101 b), Rangipuhl (7st 71b), Awarna Rose (79i), Sunbeam (7at), and Cordelia (6st 91b) also started. Mr Powell despatched the Seld In almost an even line, Musket and St. Katherine at once assuming command, followed by Retina, Cordelia, and Rosefeldt. Past the stand the first time the order was — Retina, Musket, Awarua Rose, St. Katherine, and the rest close up. Round the I:2nd Musket again took command, and looked like leaving the filed, but Queen of Trumps soon closed on him, and the two greys raced together nntil Robson took his mount np, aad came Into the straight in the van. Priest bronght his mount along with a terrific rush, and passing the greys rapidly overhauled St. Katherine, when a very exciting race ensued, which was finally won by a neck, Musket a length away. Time, 3min ssec, the fastest ever recorded. Dividend, £5 16s.

Noyade gob away with the start, which she maintained until the home turn, when Detrett brought up his mount, and passed the post an easy winner. Time, lmin 17 3-sth sec. Dividend, £1 19s.
