WAIPAWA.

! (FROM OUK OWN CORRESPONDENT.) May 2, 1891. i One Anthony James Tyrcr, who had i been drinking not wisely, but too well, i pleaded guilty before the local Bench this ! morning, and was convicted and ordered i to come up for sentence when called upon. He belonged to the swagger fraternity, oi'd cleared forthwith. The polico arc in search of a yoiiugster named Borgstrom on a charge of larceny from the premises of Mr S. M'Greevy, butcher. When the polico were about to arrest him this forenoon he jumped on a horse belonging to a person named Buckley and galloped off in the direction of Waipukuran. The details of the case are said to bo rather interesting An information has been laid against two of our local sportsmen, Messrs Abrahams and Olsen, for trespassing without leavo at Ashcott in search of game, and shooting tuls, which are protected birds, three of which were found in possession of the defendants. Peter Dnbois died early this morning of old age, after snffcrinß for five days from bronchitis. He was "8 years of age, and one of the oldest settler* hereabouts, having been here about 33 years, He used to tel! of his early adventtucs when serving under Garibaldi in South America. He also served as a trooper in the Hawko's Bay defeuco force. there is a rumor that the Railway Commissioners havo decided that the truin formerly leaving Napier at .'I p.m. for Danevirke is to bo re-instated. The Heretannga (Mnharnbarn) school committee are Messrs Lines, Wall, ltcade, Morris, Goldfinch, Sunders, and May. A rather curious phase of local government ia noticeable in regard to the Dauevirke Hoad Board, which will hold two elections on Monday And Tuesday next. The one is an extraordinary vacancy for two seat*, for which Messrn Ailkcn, Harry, V. G. Cowper, and X, VS ille are nominated ; the second is an ordinary election for three vacancies, tor which Met-srs M. Henderson, \V. Hopper, T. M'Dermott, and T. Miller are nominated. Why both elections could not be held on the same day is a matter difficult of comprehension. Anyway it is a matter of money and time. An election uf three members of the , Ormondvillc Hoad Board will be held on Wednesday next, and it is expected will be hardly fought. The candidates are Messrs Andrews, Raines, Brabazon, Forward, Leach, J. Neilson, md Packer. It is rumored that the railway workshops are to be removed from Napier to Palmerston. Couple this with the alteration of the mile posts and other little indications, and does it not look as if the Railway Commissioners wanted to make Palmerston the hub of— wrll, the North bland ? It is a notorious fact that our line is the best paying one in the colony, and if anyone doubts this let him refer to the returns as gazetted. Bnt in future these will he merged into the Palmerston section, and the average ot our line and those connected with it will be considerably reduced. If the rates paid on this line are compared with those on some of these badly-paying lines, it will be seen that we arc paying on a higher scale. Is it not time that the Chamber of Commerce roused into action to prevent Napier being reduced to tbe status of a mere fishing village 't Messrs Hardy, Joseph Howard, J. Hoidcn, and George Parkinson, fenr., have been nominated for North Ruataniwha Koad Board. Poll for three on Thursday next. Messrs J. P. Beachon, J. Matthew?, J. B. Rhodes, M. Sattrnp, M. Sorenson, \V. J. Stead, junr., and A. F. White are nominated tor Ruataniwha Koad Board. Poll for five on Thursday next. The Land Court disposed of * Jew succession cases this forenoon, and as Mr Edwards is now improving, it is expected that the Waikopiro case will be resumed on Monday. A footbul] match between the Tc Aute College junior boys and the second fifteen of Waipawa schoolboys jilaved here this afternoon resulted in a win for the former by one point to nil. Another match i between Waipawa junior club and Waii pnkurau juniors was played thid afternoon i at the latter plnce. Waipukurau won by i two tries to nil. \V. Fletcher was capI tain for our boys, and E. Vaiiguan for the home team.
