Kroude's new novel just published deals with social life in Ireland in the last century, and treats on the misgovernment then prevalent there. Her Majesty the Queen attended the funeral of the late Duchess of Cambridge in Kew Cemetery, and laid a wreath of flowers on the coiiin, (Received April 11, 1 a.m.) April 10. Mr Thomas Buckland, of Charters Towers (Queensland), has commenced an action against the Echo newspaper, claiming £25,000 damages for an alleged libel contained iv a statement published by that journal to the effect that Mr Buckland was an absconder. In the House ot Commons Lord Henry Bruce, M.P. for the Chippenham division of Wilts, has given notice of a question asking, whether the Admiralty would recognise the services of the Calliope's officers and crew in saving their vassel in the recent hurricane at Samoa. The death is announced of Michael Eugene Chevreul, the eminent savant of Paris. He was a centenarian, having been born in the year 1786. It is reported that the Marquis of Londonderry, Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, will fljpign that office in August next for private reasons. The wool sales are very animated. They will close on the 4th of May. Mr Henniker Heaton has arranged that bir Charles Russell, Q.C., shall arbitrate in the dispute connected with the administration of the Vandeliem estates in Ireland. Mr Gladstone declined to support Dr. Clarke's (M.P. for Caithness) abstract motion in favor of a separate Parliament for Scotland on the ground that the question was not ripe for settlement. The motion was negatived by a majority of 121.
